ESMOD Little Black Dress Exhibition held at MATRADE in conjunction with Malaysia Fashion Week 2015 was launched by international fashion designer Dato’ Jimmy Choo and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) CEO Datuk Dzulkifli Mahmud, with Secretariat for the Advancement of Malaysian Entrepreneurs (SAME) Advisor Peter Phang and ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Head of Fashion Design Yong Chi Yen.
The ESMOD Little Black Dress Exhibition was organised by the ESMOD Kuala Lumpur team which comprised of fashion design lecturers and students from the fashion design school. The exhibition features latest trendsetting apparels were designed by ESMOD Kuala Lumpur students Heng Bowie, Ong Pei Yin, Ter Mei Ching, Ng Yi Ning, Karyn Ong, Mestizo When, Michelle Liew, Stephanie Ngew Chi Yan, Rachel Kong and Shijie Tseu.
Those students had the opportunity to explain the concept of their unique designs when International Trade and Industry Minister II Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan and Datuk Dzulkifli Mahmud visited their booths after the official launch. It was an eye-opening experience for all students as it was a rare opportunity for students to be able to meet a minister and explain the inspiration behind their designs.
Moments of inspiration continued when ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Fashion Design lecturer Herve Arjeliès shared ‘The Timeless Influence of Fashion’ with MATRADE visitors to give them a better insight on the fashion industry and the point of view from a fashion expert.
During his sharing, Arjeliès said that practicality, economics, minimalism and simplicity are what present-day consumers would prefer. Besides that, designers can also be bold in challenging the society to think of sensitive topics in ways that had never been done before.
“Designers should be able to make a garment that talks, gives impressions, and tells a story all by itself,” Arjeliès said, besides adding that fashion designers should be well-versed with the history of fashion, without which designers will not realise the important statements that fashion has made and is still seeking to make. “Part of the fashion routine is to take inspirations from the past, renewing them and re-appropriating them into contemporary fashion.”
